Hi all, I'm Peter and I'm a senior at Stuart HS soon to be either a Hokie or a Patriot. I write poetry every so often. I'm also not Italian either, despite what the subject line says.

You haven't decided which one to choose yet, Peter? What do you want to study? Have you talked to people who've been to both universities? You know, we have someone on this site that goes to George Mason. Maybe you could talk to him.

I am leaning towards Virginia Tech at the moment, but I have plans to visit both schools, despite George Mason being so close to home. As far a major goes, I'd like to major in History, but that could change. Any input on a school for a decision is welcome!

Well, it depends on if you wanna join or just be heavily associated with fraternities at GMU. I'm not part of one and I can say that social life is certainly lackluster. You'll make a lot of friends in classes, but often you'll find that about half of them commute and so you'll never see them outside of class. That is changing though, the campus has basically doubled the number of on-campus students over the past few years, and if you're not an overly social bloke then you'll have more than enough friends not joining a frat, it's just not as social as most other campuses. That being said, I gotta say the education is top-notch and it's comparatively cheap compared to your other options. Since I've been here, George Mason has gone from a tier 2 school to rank 138. That's 3 years moving over 70 places, plus it's ranked number 2 in up and coming schools, meaning it's still going to be moving up at a fast pace! From a logistical standpoint, a "cheap" degree from Mason now will look pretty amazing 10 years from now when Mason is in the top 100. No sense in dishin out much extra cash for a degree from VT unless you have a scholarship. Departments matter too, though. I can't speak for the departments at VT, but I know that GMU has some top-notch IT, Economics, Law, and Science departments. From what I've seen, even the teaching in History and other areas is of high quality.
If you're looking for fun, it won't be on campus except for occasional campus events and basketball games. Fairfax is a decent place to hang out... if you're 21. It's inconvenient to have the hospital, courthouse, and police station all within a mile from campus because funny business isn't really tolerated if you get caught. But good people go here, and once you find a bunch of kids to hang with, you'll fit right in!
Think of GMU as the more studious and more logical choice. I think if you're more interested in fun though, VT is probably the place to go. I can't say from experience, but I have that impression. GMU isn't without its fun, but I'm certain VT has more lulz
